The medical profession can be stressful. We know that's not a surprise. That's why the Mount Sinai Health System library network supports the community with its abundance of resources for education and research. Of course, even with academic and professional support, everyone needs to unwind now and then!
On Wednesday, March 14th, Levy Library teamed up with Drum Cafe to bring drumming to Mount Sinai. Through the act of creating music as a group, this session promoted creativity, strengthened non-verbal communication and reinforced the sense of community. Over the course of the event, participants were lead through drumming exercises by the instructors, had the opportunity to lead each other, and even got up and danced!
The evening wrapped up with post-drumming conversation over wine and cheese, generously provided by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences!
Thank you to the Drum Cafe team and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences for a wonderful evening!

Eager minds filed in on Friday, March 16th to hear what was in store for "How to Choose the Right Journal? Navigating Today's Scientific Publishing Environment," offered by the Office of Academic Development and Enrichment. This class, taught by Gali Halevi, Chief Director of Mount Sinai Health System Libraries, explored the complex landscape of scientific publishing and the array of tools available when deciding where to publish.
Selecting the right journal depends on the goal you are reaching for: highest possible impact factor, fastest publishing time or largest possible audience reach. Journal Article Name Estimator (JANE) is a great online tool for this. Of course, among your options may be Open Access journals. Open Access means that the articles within the journal are completely free for the reader. Open Access creates more possibility for information and idea exchange but beware of scammers. OA journals will only ask for a fee after the article has been accepted.
Scopus, Elsevier’s abstract and citation database, provides invaluable information to help aid in your decision making process. You can find journals based on which subjects they most frequently publish and you can see the journals in which your colleagues are publishing. Of equal importance is your ORCHID ID! This unique identifier is crucial for maintaining your individual research reputation and persona.
With the right tools and preparation, the mission to find the right journal will surely be a successful one!
