Many thanks to Rabbi Jo HirschmannDr. Noelle Marie JavierDr. Laura KellyDr. Rosanne Leipzig, and all who attended the Levy Library’s most recent Mindful Medicine workshop on Issues in LGBT Healthcare.

Rabbi Jo Hirschmann facilitates a break-out case study exercise.

What issues do LGBT individuals face as they age?  How does the stress of homophobia and transphobia exacerbate aging and contribute to “re-closeting” and “de-transitioning?” How can spiritual care perspectives inform the work of healthcare professionals in treating aging LGBT patients?

These are just a few of the issues that were considered in this workshop, along with a break-out case study exercise in which participants were able to apply these concerns to a specific scenario for further conversation.

Dr. Laura Kelly presents research on the challenges of aging among older LGBT adults.

Dr. Noelle Marie Javier speaks about minority stress and its relation to LGBT healthcare.

Gali Halevi, Chief Director of Mount Sinai Health System Libraries and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, was recently interviewed by Retraction Watch, an initiative of the Center for Scientific Integrity devoted to promoting transparency and integrity in science. The interview focuses on issues surrounding researchers citing retracted papers:

We’ve known for a while that too many researchers cite retracted papers. But in what context do those citations occur? Are some authors citing a retracted paper as an example of problematic findings, or do most citing authors treat the findings as legitimate, failing to realize they are no longer valid?

Visit Retraction Watch to read the full interview.
