How can I work with my EndNote library from multiple computers?

Moving Your Library Using Sync

If you're working across multiple computers or otherwise need to transfer your EndNote library to a new computer, you can use EndNote's sync feature to move to another computer with EndNote installed. First, sync your original library to your web account by following the steps on our Syncing & Sharing page. Then, use the steps outlined below on the computer you wish to transfer your library to:

  1. Open EndNote on the new computer.
  2. Select File>>New... to create a new blank library.
  3. For EndNote 20, select Library>>Sync from the top navigation bar. You may be prompted to enter your EndNote Web account credentials before proceeding. You may also get the warning message "You are about to sync or share a library that is different than the last library you synced. This will merge libraries. Do you wish to proceed?" Click "Yes" on this message to continue with the sync.
  4. For EndNote X9 and earlier, select Tools>>Sync from the top navigation bar. You may be prompted to enter your EndNote Web account credentials before proceeding. You may also get the warning message "You are about to sync or share a library that is different than the last library you synced. This will merge libraries. Do you wish to proceed?" Click "Yes" on this message to continue with the sync.
  5. Wait for the sync to finish and you will end up with the library of references from your original computer.

If you continue to work on both computers moving forward, remember to either sync your library regularly or enable automatic syncing in your EndNote preferences so that your library updates across computers.

Moving Your Library Using a Compressed EndNote Library

Another option is to save your complete library (the .enl file as well as its associated .Data folder) to a single compressed .enlx file in order to easily back up or move your library. You can later open/unzip this compressed library with EndNote.

To save a compressed library file,

  1. Open the library in EndNote.
  2. Select File>>Compress Library (.enlx)...
  3. Click "OK" to proceed and then click "Save" to save your compressed library. You'll now have a .enlx file saved with your .enl file and .Data folder.

There are several ways to move this compressed library to another computer:

  • Option 1: Email the .enlx file to yourself.
  • Option 2: Move the .enlx file using a cloud storage service or network drive.
  • Option 3: Move the .enlx file using a flash/thumb drive.

No matter the method you use to move your compressed library to a new computer, make sure you download the .enlx file to the new computer before opening it (dragging it to your desktop or documents folder is usually the easiest way to do this).

Once you open the .enlx file on the new computer, the .enl file and the .Data folder will be extracted. Open the .enl file as you normally would to view and use your library.
