Our Social Media for Clinicians workshop took place on Thursday, February 16. Attendees received an overview of current uses, benefits, risks and best practices for social media use in clinical practice, with particular emphasis on maintaining HIPAA compliance. Dr. Gali Halevi, MLS, PhD, Chief Director, MSHS Libraries (pictured below) then provided demos on key social media tools for clinicians including Doximity & Twitter, as well as tips to maximize social media impact. In recognition of Wikipedia’s growing role as a “platform for impactful learning”(1), Levy Library is partnering with the ISMMS student WikiProject Medicine group and other local Wikipedians to improve knowledge of the platform and the quality of health information on Wikipedia.
Recently, librarians from around New York City were invited to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in observance of the worldwide Wiki campaign, #1lib1ref, that completed its annual effort on February 3rd. Wiki organizers and activists frame this campaign as aiming to create a world where “every librarian adds one more reference to Wikipedia”, soliciting librarians to lend their digital literacy expertise to enhance) the integrity of Wiki articles.
Partnering with Consumer Reports Wikipedian-in-Residence, Lane Rasberry, a local leader in improving health content on Wikipedia, and ISMMS WikiProject Medicine site organizer, Felix Richter, Levy librarians Rebecca Snyder and Robin O’Hanlon hosted a two-hour workshop on wiki citation appraisal and editing. Participants had the opportunity to learn nuts and bolts about the Wiki editorial process and, for advanced contributors, to troubleshoot issues encountered while editing Wikipedia.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with highest value placed on learning Wikipedia basics. One librarian remarked that they, “looked forward to discussing the process with students who may be surprised to learn… that not just any random person can edit an article and have those changes stick”, reflecting a common misconception about Wikipedia.
According to recent evidence(2), medical students are using Wikipedia heavily but are not correcting errors when they discover them. Stay tuned for our Wiki edit-a-thon this spring where you’ll have the chance to learn Wiki editing basics and have the opportunity to share your knowledge.

On Wednesday, January 11, Rachel Pinotti, Assistant Library Director for Research and Education Services, and Andrew Coyle, Assistant Professor of General Internal Medicine & Medical Education, gave a Grand Rounds presentation – “ISMMS Institute for Medical Education Grand Rounds: Evidence Based Medicine Education – From Episodic to Integrated.”
The presentation provided an overview of the challenges and opportunities inherent in incorporating evidence-based medicine (EBM) content into the medical school curriculum. After a brief introduction to core EBM concepts and a review of what some of ISMMS’s peer institutions are doing with regards to teaching EBM, the session took a deep dive into the longitudinal curriculum developed by Rachel & Dr. Coyle for ISMMS students. Each slide included both teaching modalities and recommendations for incorporating EBM into the clinical educational environment. Dr. Reena Karani, Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, introduced Rachel & Dr. Coyle.
Additionally, Rachel recently presented a session with Linda Paulls, Mount Sinai Beth Israel Library Manager entitled “ISMMS Institute for Medical Education Grand Rounds: Evidence Based Medicine Education – From Episodic to Integrated” which was designed for an audience of practicing clinicians (both housestaff and attending physicians). The aim of this session was to equip all attendees with two or more new strategies for finding evidence to answer clinical questions. The session touched on optimal resources to consult for broad, general questions as well as for targeted specific questions. We demonstrated effective search techniques on several resources and also touched on a framework for evaluating information quality. We rounded out the session by highlighting some of the mobile apps and services provided by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Libraries, with a special nod to our Ask-A-Librarian service.
Dr. Gali Halevi, MLS, PhD (MSHS Libraries Director) will be presenting on research evaluation metrics for The Office of Academic Development & Enrichment at Mount Sinai on February 17. Dr. Halevi holds a faculty appointment in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Department of Medicine and is a recognized expert in the field of research evaluation and research metrics.

2017 has officially been designated Year of Public Health at ISMMS Libraries!
What does this mean?
The purpose of having an annual theme is to develop an annual focus that allows us to develop a deeper understanding of the goals, objectives, and activities of a specific Mount Sinai department and to in turn consider how our services, resources, and expertise can best align to support said department.
We’re kicking off Year of Public Health with a series of information sharing meetings with leaders in public health divisions at Mount Sinai Health System. In these meetings, we hope to learn more the information, collections, research, and education needs of those who work in public health.
Additionally, we aim to develop original programming throughout the year that will apply the theme of public health, starting with a Mindful Medicine seminar which will address how the ramifications of psychological and physical trauma have created a major public health issue.
