On May 29th, participants gathered for Narrative Medicine, a workshop presented as part of Levy Library's Mindful Medicine series. This workshop, lead by Alex Macy (Office of Graduate Medical Education) and assisted by Faye Reiff-Pasarew (Department of Hospital Medicine), focused on exploring the methodology of practicing narrative competence when engaged in patient relations.
Narrative Medicine, an essential skill for every provider in contact with patients, is listening to a story, interpreting it correctly and acting accordingly. The aspects of the narrative that go into this methodology include: Frame, Form, Time, Plot, and Ethicality. Training in narrative medicine has shown to improve the following:
- Empathy
- Observation and attention skills
- Diagnostic accuracy
- Representation accuracy
