PubMed Tutorial from The Levy Library: PubMed NOT MEDLINE
PubMed (NOT MEDLINE) Content
PubMed provides access to MEDLINE and to other records that are not a part of the MEDLINE database.
MEDLINE citations make up the majority (approximately 80%) of the PubMed, but PubMed includes other records that are not a part of MEDLINE. Records in PubMed that are not part of MEDLINE do not contain MESH terms.
Among the PubMed records that are not part of MEDLINE are:
- Citation records in PubMed that have not yet been indexed for MEDLINE. As of July 2015, over 110,000 citations are awaiting indexing. This includes the newest citations, ones that have not yet been processed.
- Citations for manuscripts by NIH-funded researchers that are not published in MEDLINE journals
- Citations for content in the NLM's PMC, an open archive of full-text journal articles
- About 4,000 records for selected books, book chapters and reports in the NCBI Bookshelf
Records in PubMed that are not part of MEDLINE do not contain MESH terms.
Check Your Status Tags
PubMed records are labeled with Status Tags that identify their stage of processing. Note that the Status Tags are available on the Abstract view only.
MEDLINE records are identified with the status tag [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
Records in PubMed but not yet a part of MEDLINE are labeled as:
"As supplied by publisher": usually records too new to have been checked for accuracy
"In process" citations: new records being evaluated for indexing and including in MEDLINE
